My Top Ten Favorite YA Covers!!

topten

Top Ten Tuesday
is a list feature that was created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they give you a different question or topic where you can answer by listing your top ten choices.

This week’s topic is: Top Ten Favorite Book Covers

I decided to go for covers of books that have already been released. It was a bit hard picking my top ten favorite covers, there’s so many awesome ones out there but these are the ones I seemed to have loved the most. Now this is all about the covers, it doesn’t at all mean that these are my favorite books, some of these I wasn’t really fond of or maybe the cover didn’t really relate to it at all but the covers were eye catching to me and would’ve made me pick up these books at a store.

covers

Hourglass by Myra McEntire: Now this one for sure was on of my favorite books last year and that cover was so stunning, the color was perfect and bright enough, and the girl walking on the wall, WHAT???!!. If I would’ve seen this at the books store without knowing a thing about it I would’ve picked up for sure.

The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan: I loved this series too, such a great one that got me addicted to zombie books. I know this girl is looking all kinds of awkward and uncomfortable in that position but I think it goes great with the whole series, very eerie and desperate, on the verge of giving up which went with this book very well.

Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick: I looooved this cover, I hadn’t heard much of the book until I saw this great cover. It’s shimmery and the black and white w/ the bits of red on the feathers and the hot guy falling from the sky fit perfectly with the story.

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff: This one is creepy and I love it, it’s got those sharp objects hanging over the stroller which makes you think “what’s wrong with this baby?" It’s also shimmery, obviously I love shimmery covers and I actually ended up liking this book a lot.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis: Ahhhh this is one of my favorite books, it’s a pretty amazing series and the cover with the purples and pinks and the stars it’s just so eye caching that it will make you do a double take if you pass by it at a bookstore. Plus the couple that looks like they’re going to do one of those upside down kisses…love it! Not only is the cover great but the dust jacket of this book is double sided, so you get two awesome covers!

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi: I love UK covers, I did like the US cover of this book too but this UK cover was just… I don’t know.. I just love it. Maybe because you can really see the differences between the girl and the guy, maybe because it’s a drawing instead of real people on the cover and we don’t see that often, I don’t know maybe’s because of how they’re embrace and floating but I fell in love with it when I saw it and I want it!

Matched by Ally Condie: This is another shimmery cover, I have a thing for those obviously but I think the green is so vibrant and eye catching for sure. Unfortunately for this one I didn’t love the book as much as I did the cover, it just didn’t live up to my expectations but the cover it’s still a great one.

Slice of Cherry by Dia Reeves: I like creepy covers, I just have a thing for them. This one gives a sense of innocence with the teacups but then you see that dripping blood and you know this isn’t going to be a light and fluffy read. I also love the font on the title and the author’s name. Plus even though the book was a little disturbing and creepy and should not be read while you’re eating, I ended up liking it because it was so different.

Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by David Levithan & Rachel Cohn: I looooved this book, it’s definitely a favorite and even though the US cover was nice and all this is another UK one that I love way better, I think it’s the drawings and doodles on it. It’s just so different than the US version, this is another one I would love to have in my collection.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin: This is a wonderful cover I think, I have a thing for water covers, they’re captivating. I own the book but haven’t read it yet, I know I’m lame but I really do love this cover, it’s mysterious and sexy. Is he saving her or are they just embracing in the water? I guess I would know if I read the book.

Book Birthdays!!!

It’s the return of Book Birthdays on the blog, or maybe just my return to blogging. Sorry I’ve been away for so long but it’s been an overwhelming beginning of the year so far, I’ve missed it terribly though and I’m ready to get back on it. I’ve missed so many book news by being away for so long, but I never stopped reading. Can’t live without having a good book in my purse or on my phone, available whenever I get a bit of free time.

So now on to this week’s new releases! If you click on the picture it will take you to their Goodreads page where you can read the synopsis and add it to your list, the title will take you to Amazon in case you’d like to order the book.

Happy Book Birthdays to the authors of these new releases!!

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

11594257

Publisher: Harper Teen

Released on January 3, 2012

Since she’d been on the outside, she’d survived an Aether storm, she’d had a knife held to her throat, and she’d seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria’s help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

In her enthralling debut, Veronica Rossi sends readers on an unforgettable adventure set in a world brimming with harshness and beauty. (from HarperTeen)

I just love it when a book can get under my skin that even after a few days and starting two other books I still can’t get it out of my mind. That’s what Under the Never Sky did to me, not only from its crazy ending but with its characters that captivated me and its world full of originality.

The beginning starts off with a bang, we get some pretty fast paced craziness right from the start that just gives you a taste what this book book will be like… a wild unpredictable ride. After a few chapters when Aria gets exiled from the only place she ever knew, things begin to slow down a bit but it does not become boring at all, not in the least. We actually get a good amount of fascinating world building and lots of character development which I loved, we get to know Aria and Perry deeply which helps to easily connect with them and grow to love them.

I was a bit hesitant about reading another dystopian, we had quite a lot last year and there were hits and misses for me, several. I’m glad Under the Never Sky was not like that, it actually had a lot of uniqueness to it. There were two different types of societies, one highly advanced and futuristic and another one that seemed at times like the prehistoric times, and at others a bit medieval. It wasn’t confusing though, there was plenty of greatly detailed world building that it felt like this futuristic world Aria was living in was a character itself, with a personality of its own. I am glad for the time the author took to describe it,  It was plenty scary and creepy, but also beautiful at times. Another thing I loved was that there was no insta-love but more of a hate on first sight kind of relationship that took some time to develop into something else. The ending was killer, ackkk!! Not quite an infuriating cliffhanger but one of those that had me flipping back and forth between the last few pages to make sure I didn’t miss anything. It definitely leaves a lot of unanswered questions about some shocking things that you’ll discover towards the end of the novel.  The wait for the sequel will be torturous but if it’s like this one it’ll be well worth it. If you love exhilarating dystopian reads with originality and a bit of supernatural aspects to it, then I highly recommend Under the Never Sky. Fantastic debut!

Don’t Breathe a Word Blog Tour- Character Interview w/ Creed + Giveaway

I’ve been sooooo excited about this book since Holly first announced it, I read her debut novel TELL ME A SECRET and fell in love with her writing that I was thrilled to get an early copy of DON’T BREATHE A WORD and let me tell you that it was everything that I expected, I loved it just as much as her first novel. You can read my very gushy review of this very realistic novel here.

Creed was my favorite character from the novel, he overshadowed everyone else with his personality and won me over completely from the first moment he met Joy, so I was pretty excited to get him for an interview. I hope you enjoy it and don’t forget to check out the rest of the stops in the tour!

Holly Cupala pink fullThanks so much to Cynthia for hosting me, and welcome to the DON’T BREATHE A WORD blog tour!

Don’t Breathe a Word is the story of Joy, a girl who flees her suburban life because of a life-threatening secret and finds herself on the streets of Seattle. A homeless boy called Creed has offered his help, if only she can get to him before it’s too late—the last thing she expects is to fall in love. Creed dreams of making it in the music industry, and he is a kind of protector for two street teens who wouldn’t survive without him. But Creed has secrets of his own…

Cynthia has asked Creed to answer a few questions for you today:

Help

If you could go back to the time before you left home, would you have done it all over again? Or would you have tried to find another alternative?  It’s hard to know, because things happen for a reason. Everything would have been different for May and Santos, but then I would have been there for my mom. I wish I could find a way to help everyone, but in the end they have to help themselves.

Where does the nickname “Creed” come from?  It’s about the same thing as my music—meaning and truth and conviction. Justice is important to me. It’s about who I am.

What is one thing that you missed the most (besides your family) when you ran away? I missed riding Callisto into the ocean. I dream about it all the time.

You’re a musician, what type of music or is there a specific song that you like to think about or listen to when you’re feeling down or need some inspiration? Hey Marseilles, Hold the Morning. It reminds me of Triste…and of Joy. Hey Marseille is a Seattle band and I really like their stuff. Here’s their playlist, Hold the Morning is Track 8:

If you were to come across another teenager that was thinking of running away, what type of advice would you give them?
I’ve seen things on the streets that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and I’ve met people there I consider family. People I love. The streets are not the answer. Finding someone to trust, someone to help, is the answer.
